Mom decides to lose weight

It’s been more two years since I had my second baby.  I still haven’t reached my pre- preg weight! Losing weight seems much harder than it used to be.  I am sure that I am not the only mom going through this…

Am I right?

Mom - exercise

There are many hurdles that we face to lose weight.. These are few I came across:

  • Exhaustion and fatigue — These are common after giving birth, especially if you’re breastfeeding, which can deplete your energy. Be aware of your energy levels, and only do what you can handle.

  • An Erratic schedule — For the first few weeks and months after you give birth, your baby’s feeding schedule may change constantly, making it tough to follow any kind of normal routine.

  • Time constraints – You may find that you only have a few minutes here or there for exercise. If that’s the case, take advantage of the time you have, and don’t be afraid to spread your workouts throughout the day.

  • Mood swings — As your hormones get back to normal, you may have some ups and downs, perhaps even dealing with postpartum depression. Exercise may help your mood, but you should talk to your doctor about the best way to handle your situation.

  • Guilt — Many new moms feel guilty when they take time for themselves for exercise. It’s tough to remind yourself that you’ll actually be a better mom if you focus on getting stronger. Doing so will also set a good example for your child.

These are true for me – between working, being a mom, wife , cooking, cleaning, etc, etc.. Where do you get the time to work out ?

Did I hear someone say diet?

I have tried every diet in the world possible – no help!

Anyways, I have decided to give it a final go – Within 12 months I plan to lose 20 pounds.

exercise

Reasonable right?  My take is:

  1. Drink lots of water
  2. Try to exercise 15 min every day.
  3. I am a vegetarian – so reduced amount of Carbs
  4. No chocolates and sweets :( .

Lets see how it works – I’ll keep you all posted.

In the mean time – feel free to share your experiences with me :)

5 Tips to Lose Weight Quick

By: Owen Linnen

Are you fed up with Diets and Lose Weight Quick plans? Most of us have started (and stopped) more than our share of weight loss programs. Here’s an interesting, and seemingly contradictory, fact. If you want to lose weight quick, slow down. Let me explain. If you need to lose weight fast and start off using some radical weight loss program, you won’t see it through. And even if you do, as soon as you go off of the plan, you’ll gain that weight (and more) right back.

So, if you want to lose weight quick, slow down! In the end, you will lose the weight faster and have a much better chance of keeping it off. This article contains 5 tips that have been proven successful by weight loss participants using an assortment of methods to lose weight . Let’s take a look:

* Weight Loss Tip #1: Set Realistic Goals. Sometimes we set ourselves up for failure by setting unrealistic weight loss goals. Before starting a weight loss program, ask yourself these questions:
  1. "How much weight do you want to lose?"
  2. "What is your time-frame to lose the weight - a day, a week, a month, or more?"
Naturally, we all want to lose weight quick, but remember - if you set unrealistic goals, you will only end up with more frustration and disappointment. Better to take a little time and achieve your weight loss goals, than to set unrealistic goals only to fail. # Weight Loss Tip #2: Prepare to Succeed. You must think of your weight loss program as a new lifestyle. An integral part of that new lifestyle is removing obstacles to your success. So, get rid of that junk food, those colas in the refrigerator, and those other high-calorie, empty-nutrition "foods" you have around. Do you know why you are hungry all the time? It's because those junk foods are not providing the nutrients your body craves. The result is that your body's appetite center keeps urging you to eat in an effort to get the nutrients it needs to stay healthy. # Weight Loss Tip #3: Eat a Healthy Breakfast. Yep, Mom was right. A nutritious breakfast is an important ingredient in a successful weight loss program. This is the most important meal, so you should never miss it. Skipping breakfast programs your brain to think that you are hungry, starved and deprived. You will feel lethargic and, when the pressure is too much, you will go on an eating binge. We've all been there, but this is suicide when you are trying to lose weight quick. # Weight Loss Tip #4: Exercise. If you really want to kick your metabolism into high gear and lose weight fast, then exercise is your friend. And, contrary to what you've been told for years, aerobic exercise is not the best form of exercise for rapid weight loss. Actually, studies are beginning to show that strength training and high-intensity, short duration exercises (as opposed to low-intensity, long duration exercises) are a superior form of exercise to help a person lose weight quick. # Weight Loss Tip #5: Sleep (My personal favorite). Always get plenty of sleep during your weight loss program. Research shows that a normal adult would need an approximately 7-8 hours of sleep a day. This helps to keep your system working in perfect order, which is crucial to the success of your weight loss program. We all want to lose weight quick, but it's equally important to keep that weight off once it is lost. Losing weight and then gaining it back is unhealthy, both physically and mentally. If you really want to lose weight quick and be sure that you don't gain it back, the best approach is to follow a proven plan. Be sure, however, that it's not one of those trendy "Hollywood" diets. They are destined for failure. Author Resource:->  Diet and exercise will only get you so far: a Extreme Fat Loss is the secret weapon that will have you losing fat fast. Easy Ways to Lose Weight and Burn Excess Fat Safely

There are easy ways to lose weight and burn excess fat safely from your body which we will reveal to you in this article. You complained you are overweight and have tried dieting by eating once a day and recently you decided to switch to Diet Coke with the believe that it will help you lose weight, yet no result. You must have experience being weak from time to time from your frustrating attempts to lose weight. Do not despair! Help is on the way.

If you analyze the things you are doing to lose weight, you will observe three things (1) starvation diet, (2) feeding on the wrong type of food and (3) slow metabolism which are not helping you lose weight. There are easy ways to lose weight and burn excess fat safely and efficiently. The easy ways to lose weight safely are highlighted below to assist you achieve your desire weight loss goals.

1. You must know this little secret if you want to lose weight and burn excess fat safely; never diet or starve yourself in order to lose weight. You need to know what to eat to lose weight. In other words, you need the right food to help you burn excess fat. You may be eating the wrong food once a day and in very large quantity. What you should do to lose weight safely is to eat up to 6 small meals a day of the right food to increase your metabolism.
2. Feeding on the wrong type of food to lose weight – Many people think that Diet Coke or Diet Soda can help them lose weight but one study has proved otherwise. The study covering 8 years of data showed that your risk of becoming overweight by drinking one to two cans of soda per day is 32.8%, but your risk increases to 54.5% if you drink one to two cans of Diet soda instead. So the message here is to stay away from the bad foods and feed on the good ones like water and at times fresh juice (be absolutely sure of the source of fresh juice). A combination of citrus drink and Oolong tea can also help you to lose weight and burn excess fat fast. Try it.
3. Slow metabolism – If you are not eating right and you have excess weight, your metabolism and your liver function will be sluggish. Your liver is the main organ for burning fat, which is responsible for your metabolism; no matter the amount of exercise you do or starving you do or weight pills you swallow or herbs you drink. Once you have a sluggish liver, you cannot lose weight or burn excess fat efficiently and safely. That is why the first thing I will tell you is that no matter how clean the fuel in the tank of your car is, if the fuel filter is dirty or clog, the car will not run efficiently. Your car will jerk and cough along to your embarrassment.

To assist you lose weight safely and burn excess fat efficiently, you need to kick start fat burning through a detox (short for detoxification) program. Your liver is the fuel filter of your body. No matter how beautiful a car is with its fuel tank full and ready for a journey, if the fuel filter is dirty, a journey of 2 hours may take you 6 hours. The car will be jerking and will not move fast enough. So, if you have a sluggish and inefficient liver which is your fat filter, it will be difficult to lose weight safely, shed and burn excess fat efficiently; especially if you are overweight.

Exercise or physical activity should not be ignored if you want to lose weight safely and burn excess fat. Exercise makes us healthy too! Being physically active is all about engaging in an activity that you enjoy; which makes you sweat and conditions your heart. Exercise is not meant for those that want to lose weight alone; it is a must for every one that desires sound health and a beautiful body.

Water forms about two-thirds of our body mass. Sweating through exercise allows the water in our body to flow freely. Just imagine, water standing in a pool of water for some days. The water begins to stink, breeds disease and becomes toxic. It is the same process that happens in your body if you do not exercise.

If you can just follow the above easy ways to lose weight and burn excess fat safely, you will be amazed how easy it is to move from overweight to the desired weight you have set for yourself. If you say you have no time to lose weight you will be surprise you will have time to fight the sickness that may visit you. Take the right action now and you will be happier for it.

Toxic Free To Be Skinny

If you have been struggling like I was, to break free of extra weight, unnecessary stress and low energy then a nutritional cleanse may be the answer you have been looking for. However in the world we live in it’s easy to be so busy that we get distracted doing what we need to do to take care of ourselves completely. Many total health programs are either too complicated or never really get to the root of the problem as to why we are carrying extra weight and why we are diseased and tired. Nutritional Cleansing is the answer to most of your problems.

http://www.drspeaksout.com

We brush our teeth, our automobile gets and oil change, our dryer’s lint filter gets cleaned out but we do not think about the junk that gets into our bodies. No engine works well when clogged with gunk and our intricate bodies are no different. For optimum health we need a good cleansing system that is easy to use and will give our bodies a fighting chance to fight disease.

Nutritional Cleansing is the process of cleansing the toxins from our body and getting our bodies back in balance so we can begin operating the way our bodies were created to function before the pesticides, contaminants and antibiotics stared wreaking havoc in our lives.

The goal of Nutritional Cleansing or detoxing is to get your body and organs back into balance and give your body a rest from processing all the junk food, soft drinks, fatty foods, preservatives and medicines that we consume every day.

What most people don’t realize is that detoxing is a commitment to yourself. It is not a diet or a fast. It is an educated stance you are taking to get your life better and be the best YOU that you can be. Having a simple to use plan and education will change everything about your life. You will have more energy, sleep better, grow lean muscle and fight free radicals and disease so much better.

It’s important to know that no matter how young or healthy one thinks he or she may be, or how pure we try to keep our bodies, we live in a world whereby many toxins are forced upon us, by the air we breathe and the water we drink and the food we eat. This in turn impacts our health and longevity. Toxins can build up and after some time will cause severe life threatening problems.

Obviously because we are all busy with life many do not want to be ruled by a new diet or an extreme detoxing plan.  The system I want you to know about is easy to use and will not require a lot of time. It is actually easier than what you are now putting into your body.

Shitake Mushroom Coffee Organic and Anti-viral, Anti-Fungal, Anti-Tumor

Javafit Coffee Business Opportunity

http://www.DietCoffee.org

The second most widely cultivated mushroom in the world, shiitake is a culinary delight and a mainstay in the Japanese diet. Because of its use in folk medicine and its availability, it has been the subject of intense research.

Cochran¹s review of medicinal mushrooms, “Medical Effects”(Biology and Cultivation of Edible Mushrooms, Academic Press, 1978), lists shiitake extracts as having antifungal, antitumor, and anti-viral effects. The anti-viral effects are believed due to shiitake¹s ability to induce interferon, although because of its oral effectiveness other factors are also suspected.

UGH!

Pouind So I am not starting off the week on a good note. Weighed myself this morning and I gained a half pound, what the heck! So I am back at 201 and annoyed about it so much that I am not eating well and my 1.5 hr commute didn’t help the situation. This morning ate a mini 100 calorie bagel at home, then got to work and had a piece of french toast and scrambled eggs and a 200 calorie snapple. Now I am eating a healthy choice for lunch but it is being accompanied by a diet soda which I didn’t drink for 5 days. Tonight I have a couple of appts after work so if I have to work out then I wont be able to do it until 8:30pm. I am not going to enjoy that but I should do it, bc I feel like i havent accomplished anything!

Met My Goal - 199

Today I weighed in at 199 pounds!  I haven’t seen the 100’s since before my children were born, about 12 years ago.  I’m really excited.  My next goal is to get my BMI under 30, and out of the obese (I hate that word) category, which is only 2 pounds more to lose.  I’m aiming to get there within 7-10 days.  And the following goal is to be 188 pounds.  That’s my biggie goal, significant for me because it will mean I have lost 100 pounds from my highest weight ever.  I still can’t believe I ever let myself go that badly, but I won’t dwell on that because today is a happy day!

How to Lose Weight in One Week

Weight Loss is not as hard as it seems. You have to be motivated and you have to understand that you can’t lose incredible amounts of weight in a short period of time. But you can lose a lot if you follow a couple of guidelines and set appropriate goals.

I had my best weight loss results when I tried to lose between 2-4 pounds per week. Give yourself a weekly weight-loss goal. If you lose more, great, if not, don’t be disappointed. Your main goal is to keep losing some weight from week to week. If you accomplish that, be proud and move on. You’ll be surprised how quick one week is over.

A. Eat energy food

Food that gives the body energy is vital when trying to lose weight. Eat many fresh fruits and vegetables. Prepare yourself fresh salads. Reduce the sweet and fatty foods as much as you can. But don’t take them out of your diet completely or you will lose motivation and life quality.

Try to go by the formula 70%-30%. Eat a minimum of 70% fresh food (fruits, vegetables, salads) and a maximum of 30% other food like lean fish and meat. Or whole grain pasta and bread. Eat small portions of fresh nuts, as well. Try to keep a well balanced diet but with the majority on fruits, vegetables and salads. An only-fruit-day per week will work wonders on your scale.

Don’t think: I don’t feel like eating fresh fruits and veggies. Your body does need the nutrients in the fresh food to have energy and to lose weight!

B. Be active

You don’t have to go running hours and hours in the forest, no.  Or go swimming. I always hated when people told me to go swim, because it was so healthy. Yes, I know it’s healthy, but I was fat. There was no way I would have felt comfortable showing up in my bathing suit.

Anyways, do try to implement some routine workout into your life. Find something you like. For me, fast walking worked the best. To this day, I’m walking 30 min everyday. Except on Sundays, when I rest. Summing that up to the whole week, it makes a big difference. On good days, I’m walking during my lunch break or I walk to my favorite fruit store across town, as well.

Without being active, your body will have a much harder time to lose the weight. Actually, you will lose weight, but much slower. Also, your chances to keep the weight will decrease rapidly.

C. Make notes

Write down the time you’re active. Write down when and what you eat. Weigh yourself at the same time everyday and then write it down. And then compare the weekly results. It will help to understand how your body works (remember, everybody is different) and how to adjust and control your weight.

Regulating Body Fat and the Role of Stress

To work on achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, it’s necessary first to understand the basics of how you regulate body fat and what factors affect this system. Your body fat regulating system is charged with ensuring your body has the energy it needs to function properly. Normally, your body maintains a small amount of stored energy as fat to balance your daily needs with your food intake. Daily needs range from exercise to providing basic nutrients to your cells.

If your fat regulating system perceives a threat, it will respond by switching into protection mode. In protection mode, the amount of energy that your body saves increases, the visible result of which is the accumulation of excess body fat. This effect is compounded by low caloric diets. The less energy you give your body, the more it saves. Really, this type of reaction is a positive adaptation for survival. If you were to lose weight when you are stressed and starving you would die.

Losing Weight With The Best Hoodia Product

Do you every so often start a diet but don’t accomplish them? It’s impossible to finish a diet when there are so various temptation near us. Woudn’t it be more effective to hybernate a while so we can finish our diet excluding temptation. Then it would be possible to conclude our diet till we finish it without giving in to the longing to eat.
I heard about Hoodia a diet supplement that may be able to assist us. It’s believed to help people on diets so they stop craving for food. It makes you feel full by suppressing hunger. So, it isn’t really expected to make you lose weight, just repress your compulsion to eat. I’d be willing to try it the next time I need to lose weight. With so many Hoodia supplements out there, it’s quite hard to tell which one is the best Hoodia product.

Hoodia looks like a cactus and can be found in the deserts of South Africa. If the raw materials for the Hoodia health supplement comes from Africa, there’s a better chance that it’s real stuff. I don’t think the best Hoodia product would come from countries like Mexico, Texas, India or China. Many products from around the globe most likely get their Hoodia from Africa also. In some cases they are diluted during manufacture. Make sure that they have a certificate on their website that shows that their Hoodia originates from South Africa. This certificate is verification that their Hoodia was truly shipped from Africa. It will be a great sign that the corporation you are dealing with sell the best Hoodia Product.Let’s not forget that the best Hoodia product will only check hunger, not make you drop weight. The diet program takes care of the losing weight part. Some dishonest manufacturers may combine things like caffeine, Ephedra or other stimulants. Ephedra is in fact efficient when it comes to losing weight. It has notorious harmful effects that can be life threatening. By making their patrons lose weight at once with these additives, they deceive people by making them believe they have a very effective product. Another purpose for doing this is,maybe their supply of Hoodia from Africa is inadequate, so they have to make up for it by adding chemicals. Genuine Hoodia is pricey. Stimulants and chemical additives can bring about the same effects but with negative reactions. The best Hoodia product should never be available too inexpensive.
Try to find out the supplement you are about to buy uses the best part of the plant, the Hoodia aerial stem. This is the part of the plant that the African Bushmen use to repress their appetite while hunting in the desert.

Other companies use the other parts of the Hoodia plant which are cheaper but not as powerful. This can be misleading by claiming they use genuine Hoodia but only use the inferior part of hte plant. It is wrong but it sells. I sure hope you don’t get deceived with that. Companies that provide the best Hoodia product exhibit a document of laboratory analysis from an independent lab that verifies the source, quality and detailed figures of the contents. They have recent lab tests that prove the superiority of their products.
One of the signs of the best Hoodia product would be their transparency about their company. You ought to be able to talk to an employee when you call or receive a response when you email them. Check if they gve a money back pledge if you are not satisfied with their product. The best Hoodia product to supplement a weight loss plan is made from the Hoodia Gordonii species. I think there are about a dozen genus in the Hoodia family. The Hoodia Gordonii specie is the only one that’s confirmed to check hunger. The other Hoodia species were not found to check the need to eat as the Gordonii specie. Less carbohydrates, sweets and calories are ingested if you take Hoodia while on a diet plan. This way you diminish the times you break your diet and you will steadily lose weight till the diet is finished. Take note of our tips if you want the best. Hoodia product suppliers aren’t all trustworthy. Vigilance is called for when selecting a Hoodia product.

Lost: 12lb in body fat in 5 weeks without dieting

We are now 6 weeks into the ongoing gradual programme designed to help Catrina back to optimum health.  As she and every just about every other dieter knows – if you go on a slimming diet sooner or later you come off the diet and back creeps the weight until you’re worse than back to where you started – you’re even heavier!

So despite the fact that Catrina needs to lose a lot of weight I haven’t put her on a weight loss plan but I have asked her to cut out stimulants and the foods that were found to be toxic to her in an intolerance test.

At the start of the programme she was so toxic that drinking lemon water made her feel queasy. Adding ginger for a while relieved this, then she was able to tolerate the lemon water alone and for the last week has been tolerating a spoonful of olive oil added to it. This is real progress and a clue that she is very gradually becoming less toxic.

Last week at the end of week 5 she’d been off all her intolerant foods for at least 5 weeks, sugar had been cut out last mainly because a sugar free diet is really inconvenient. If you think you don’t each much sugar this short video is food for thought: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p004tm69

We’ve agreed that Catrina won’t weigh herself as this is “diet” mentality however after 5 weeks I wanted to check what was happening with her weight and body make up. The results were fantastic.

Overall Catrina had lost 10.5lb in weight, even better her body fat percentage had dropped from 55% to 53% which means that she lost a total of 12lb in FAT. So proportionally she has a little more water than she had before.

12lb of body fat in just 5 weeks is a great result and she’s thrilled – especially as slimming is her secondary goal.

I continue to be impressed by her commitment, both to the techniques I’ve asked her to do and the ban on stimulants. Giving up alcohol was Ok at first but she’s starting to miss it now but I want her liver to be much healthier before we can talk about an occasional glass of wine.

Castor Oil packing twice a week is stepping up the process of detoxing her liver in preparation for a liver flush in April.

Today I used Thought Field Therapy to establish that her unconscious mind and conscious mind are congruent (agreeing) and discovered that although her short term goal was good for both the long term goal was not supported by her unconscious. Without clearing this in all likelihood her unconscious would have sabotaged her efforts resulting in failure despite the good intentions of her conscious mind.

Her medium term goal is to be a size 18 by September, I’m confident she’s going to make it.

Why People Fail With Online Businesses?

In my opinion, here are the main 4 reasons people fail with their MLM Online Business:

1. They don’t know how to Sell Online – Selling online requires that you convince someone to buy something.  It requires some type of contact with your potential customer (face to face, telephone, letter, email, video contact and alike).  Some people seem to think that the only contact with a potential customer, is to put up a web site and hope everything else falls into place.  This type of thinking or approach is wrong and will lead you to definite failure.  Selling online is somewhat of a science, and with time, effort and training can be a learned, and successful experience.  My online Ardyss Distributor Business does quite nicely online due to the online strategies I have implemented.

2. They have no Leverage Online – What I mean by this is, when you start an online business most of us who are new to it have little to no customer leads or customer base. Therefore, one has to be built…so you get your site up and going, then purchase some leads and wait for the business to take off!  Days and weeks go by and nothing happens-No Clicks, NO SALES and maybe some spam complaints. Then you purchase some more leads and again- the same result.  You follow this cycle until you get frustrated, get shut down due to spamming or run out of money to spend on more leads.  Eventually you close the business and look for another opportunity only to find the same cycle.  Now What?  I use a very systematic approach to leverage my online Ardyss Distributor Business.  My strategy is a 5 prong approach that works very well.

3. They don’t know how to Market Online – Online marketing is a learned skill. There are many different avenues to online marketing, and many different tools to use. Many new business owners do not have a clue as to what to do or where to start. Some may try unstructured pay per click ads (PPC) others may purchase leads and try email marketing, others do safelist marketing or use traffic exchanges, which by the way is time consuming.  Eventually, it becomes like throwing darts with limited or no results yield. Eventually they give up.  You must use a very well planned systematic approach to online marketing.  I use some of the above approaches as well as others, however I use a system to drive my online marketing for my Ardyss Business.

4. They think the Product will sell itself – This type of thinking will lead you to definite failure. There are several examples of bad products that do well online and several examples of good products that fail miserably. Don’t set yourself up believing that if you have a good product, it will sell itself!  There is a solution for all this online madness!  There are 5 basics to online marketing.  Knowing these basics and how to implement them is the key to selling any product online, whether the product is good or bad.  I use these 5 basics successfully with my Ardyss Business everyday.

My next post will focus on the 5 basics to online marketing to enable you to have  a sound online business.

Day 35: Kenpo X AND Legs & Back

[Please keep in mind that I write these posts quickly and right after finishing my workouts, so I apologize in advance for any grammatical errors, weak sentence structure, babbling, etc...]

Today’s workout was a:

FUCKING

Holy Hesus! After two days of skipped workouts, getting back and doing two in a row while still being sick will really kick your ass!

I started out with kenpo – which as usual I absolutely love because it goes by so quick. Then I thought I would take a couple hours off and do the legs and back workout later tonight. But knowing that my brain would make up some excuses later to not do it, I decided “Hey, why don’t I at least split it up for now”. So I after kenpo I decided to do ONLY the “Back” portion of the legs & back workout.

At this point I felt great. And decided “Hey since I already have the legs and back dvd in, I might as well get the legs portion of the workout out of the way as well…” So I began doing some of the exercises, fast forwarding through the already completed back workouts.

About half way into the legs exercises, my brain said again “Why don’t you just do half now, then add the other half of the workout to tomorrows workout!”. I was tired. My fat-guy ego knew this. But then my future-thin-guy ego kicked in and said “fuck that, just get it all done NOW, you will make excuses later”.

So I ended up doing all of it…

I feel great to have it all out of the way and to be caught up and back on track with the program now. Even my girlfriend was giving me shit yesterday for missing two days! Love her.

Now it’s time for some protein drink and rest. I’m really too worn out to put up much more here. Did I mention that I’m still friggin’ sick!!

Thanks for visiting, sorry for letting you down the last two days!

Day 30: NEW Stats/Measurements & Pictures

Having just completed my first thirty days, I have updated my stats/measurements and comparison pictures.

Here’s one comparison from day 1 – 30:

———————–Day One ——————————————–Day 30————————

Click here to view the rest of the pictures

Click here to view the weekly changes in measurements

Again, the measurements haven’t seem to change too much, except for my body fat percentage (DOWN 5%!!!) but I’m told that you really don’t see many significant changes until AFTER 30 days. I hope so.

If you go to the pictures pages, I’ve posted larger pictures, and you can really start to see my shape slimming and changing, I’m quite proud of myself.

That’s it for now. I’ll keep bringing it to see the results that I’m looking for!

Just a reminder I update the pics, measurements & stats for every seven days.

Week 5 is next up…

Thanks for visiting!

Vitamins: Don't piss your money away

Anyone you ask will probably recommend that it wouldn’t hurt for you to take vitamins.  We load up on vitamin C when we are sick and we certainly rummage through our cabinets looking for echinacea when a bout of the cold finds us.  But is it worth all that money if you are just going to urinate it out of your system?  This week I’m taking a look at what makes for a good buy and what can be left in the store on the shelf.

It should come as no surprise that your body needs certain vitamins and minerals to sustain proper function.  You need them for proper function of your eyes, bones, blood, tissues, just to name a few.  Water-soluble vitamins including vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, biotin, folic acid, panthothenic acid, C, and niacin are excreted from your body easily, therefore allowing for deficiencies if not eaten through your diet.  You might not make notice of the little deficiencies that come in the form of  retaining water or  feeling tired (because you are deficient in B1 or pantothenic acid).   But you may not want more serious things to happen such as impaired nerve function,neural-tube defects for your baby if you are pregnant, and anemia (deficiencies of B12, folic acid, and B12 &B6).  For these types of reasons, vitamins should be taken more seriously. *

Just like not enough vitamins can be a problem, so can too much vitamins.  While the water-soluble vitamins will leave your body through your urine in excess, (B vitamins, folic acid, and C), the fat-soluble vitamins will stick around making it really difficult to have a deficiency in.  You may be familiar with them; they are vitamins A,D,E, & K.  Problems arise when people start loading up on vitamins with the misconception that somehow more is better.  Not the case here.  If you are taking a multivitamin which is giving you the proper doses of vitamin intake then anything more than that would be putting you at risk for problems.  Symptoms can range from being tired to having abdominal pain and losing your hair; having blurred vision and much worse- liver and kidney damage*.  The Council for Responsible Nutrition says that more than 70% of Americans are taking vitamin supplements whether it be in the form of a pill or some kind of fortification through food.  The usual suspects A, C, and E are noted for being taking in excess.  While vitamin C is excreted through your body (for reasons stated above), vitamins A and E are stored in your body, increasing the chances for getting heart attacks and strokes.  Older people are loading up on vitamins A and D, according to the Vitamin D Council, sometimes taking double of the required amounts in hopes of warding off osteoporosis.  The National Osteoporosis Foundation says that too much vitamin D can cause kidney stones and other kidney problems which can lead to bone loss.  So you can see the importance of how too much of a good thing can actually be bad for you. Supplements can contain other things like caffeine and stimulants that you may not be aware that can cause toxicity as well.

The best thing you can do is to get all of your vitamin requirements through proper nutrition.  Keith Ayoob, associate professor in the department of pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York agrees, “The best research says to take a complete multivitamin with 100 percent of the [recommended dietary allowance or RDA] and not more,” he said in a 2007 ABC article entitled, Are Too Many Vitamins Bad for Your Health?

Multivitamins make it super easy to get most of your daily requirements.  Look at your multivitamin bottle and check out the percentage of daily value and amount per serving.  Compare it to the FDA’s recommended daily amount and see how your multivitamin adds up:

RDA based on 2000 calorie diet, adults & children 4 and over

Nutrient Unit of Measure Daily Values Vitamin A International Unit (IU) 5000 Vitamin C milligrams (mg) 60 Calcium milligrams (mg) 1000 Iron milligrams (mg) 18 Vitamin D International Unit (IU) 400 Vitamin E International Unit (IU) 30 Vitamin K micrograms (µg) 80 Thiamin milligrams (mg) 1.5 Riboflavin milligrams (mg) 1.7 Niacin milligrams (mg) 20 Vitamin B6 milligrams (mg) 2.0 Folate micrograms (µg) 400 Vitamin B12 micrograms (µg) 6.0 Biotin micrograms (µg) 300 Pantothenic acid milligrams (mg) 10 Phosphorus milligrams (mg) 1000 Iodine micrograms (µg) 150 Magnesium milligrams (mg) 400 Zinc milligrams (mg) 15 Selenium micrograms (µg) 70 Copper milligrams (mg) 2.0 Manganese milligrams (mg) 2.0 Chromium micrograms (µg) 120 Molybdenum micrograms (µg) 75 Chloride milligrams (mg) 3400

So the next time you are thinking about buying vitamins for your hair or the ones that swear you’ll lose weight if you take them, think twice about the effect it will have on your body.  Are you going to be doing your body a service or are you just going to piss them away?

Day 30: I Made It!!! Hello Plyometrics.

[Please keep in mind that I write these posts quickly and right after finishing my workouts, so I apologize in advance for any grammatical errors, weak sentence structure, babbling, etc...]

DA-DADA-DUM!!!! I made it to day 30. I can honestly say this is the most that I’ve ever worked out consistently in my entire life. I know it may not mean much to you but it means a lot to me.

I’ve read in a couple of online forums that the majority of people who take on the p90x program quit after 30 days. So I guess this is my “bring it” point, and I’m determined to keep it going until day 90. Even beyond that.

Today’s workout was a return to Plyometrics, “the mother of all p90x workouts”. Today’s workout was a:

Even though I came to remember pretty quickly how much I hate Plyometrics! But I stuck with it and got through the bastard, without extended breaks or anything of the like, and I feel pretty good. It was obviously a rough start since I haven’t done plyometrics in I think 2 weeks, but I got back in my groove about half-way through it. Did I mention that I am still sick with a cold? Yeah, try doing plyometrics like that, I deserve a fucking medal for what I went through today. A fat guy medal.

Also the “injury” to my right side that I obtained from yesterday’s workout was pretty stiff this morning when I woke up, pretty stiff through the first ten minutes of plyo, but seems ok now that I didn’t really have to aggravate it in any way & I did stretch quite a bit before the workout.

So, it’s day 30 (ALREADY!!) and what does that mean? New pictures and stats/measurement updates. I really don’t have the strength, rather the patience, to do it right now, so visit back later on today and it should be posted by then.I don’t expect massive weight loss or massive changes to my pictures, but I think there will be some critical foundation changes. Plus I read around the internet and it seems the real massive change really comes between day 30 to day 90, once your body has adjusted to the new lifestyle of working out. I hope so.

Until then, thanks for visiting!

-Fat Guy.

PS. If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to leave me a comment. Remember, I’m NOT a beachbody coach or affliate, so I will be able to give you HONEST opinions about the program and what it does for my life and maybe yours.

Cycle Log: Intensity Phase Week 4

Week 4 is the first week of the second mesocycle of my Intensity Phase (click here for a detailed description of macrocyles, mesocycles and microcycles).  At this point in a periodized training program, you should be feeling stronger and faster.  The previous endurance work combined with a few weeks of high intensity training should yield noticeable results.  This is certainly the case with my training, most notably in my ability to climb.  I am much stronger going uphill now than I was a month ago. However, it is equally clear that I have a long way to go if I am to achieve the goals I set for this season (click here for my 2010 goals).  Here are the actual workouts with the plan for the week of February 15 to 21, 2010 (click here to download my plan for the Intensity Phase).

Week of 2/15/10 Mon Tues Wed Th Fri Sat Sun Total Goal 2.75 SS 1.0 SS OFF 2.0 HI 1.0 AR 1.25 PI OFF 8.0 Actual 2.50 HC 1.0 AR OFF 2.0 HI 1.0 AR 1.25 PI OFF 7.75

I had another great week.  Monday’s Hill Climb included about 2,000 feet of climbing. My Hill Interval workout included three, 3-mile ascents up a hill that gains 450+ feet. My Pyramid Interval workout was performed indoors on my TT bike and consisted of 4 x 5:00 at lactate threshold heart rate with 5 minutes recovery between hard efforts.  I did my two Active Recovery rides on a stationary bike in the gym along with two strength training workouts.  I have another hard week coming up.  I’ll let you know how it goes!

Importance of Diet Plan for Weight Loss and Healthy Living

People often talk about the best diet plan which can provide them good health. However, very few of them know what exactly a proper diet plan is. Especially woman takes it as a way to lose their weight without even knowing the real importance.

In fact, a diet plan should be aimed to provide healthy living to people. It should not only be focused for losing weight. Rather, it should be in sync with weight and healthy living. Being slim and trim does not always mean being healthy. One should always maintain his or her body mass index (BMI). That is very important in order to stay healthy.

So What Is Proper Diet Plan?

As stated above, a diet plan should be focused for healthy living, not just losing weight (until a person is overweight). Proper and balanced diet means taking essential ingredients required for body as well as avoiding extra food intake or habit of emotional eating.

Therefore, a proper diet comprises all essential nutrients required for body. It should have proper intake of vitamins, carbohydrates, fibers, and minerals so that the body can get all essential requirements fulfilled. Although modern busy lifestyle forces people to change their eating priorities, but one should always remember than leaving out traditional home-made food and migrating to junk foods just for saving some time is not a good idea.

For healthy living one should adopt the habit of eating green vegetables, cereals, and seasonal fruits, because only these things are essential for staying fit and healthy. Apart from all these eating sufficient amount of water is also important, as water is required to keep body hydrated. Lack of water in body can result in several problems.

Diet for Weight Loss

Well, diet for weight loss should be different than normal balanced diet suggested for a person with normal body mass index. Increasing weight is a common problem among next generation people. Proper weight loss diet is important for everybody facing problem of excess weight. It leads to several health problems and if not cured affects a person mentally too. Increased weight often reduces confidence of people suffering from it.

Well, ideally a person suffering from obesity should consult a weight loss diet expert. Because, depending upon the seriousness of excess weight diet patterns may vary. The same applies when a person start losing weight due to changed diet pattern. Usually, for a weight loss diet one should include cereals and fiber based food rather than fat and carbohydrate rich food. Even drinks containing added sugar should be avoided.

In summary, a diet plan should be according to the prime objective (either losing weight or just staying fit). However, it is advisable to consult dieting experts for the best results.

Day 5 - The Trial of Special K and P90X

Daily Intake For Yesterday:

Breakfast= 1 Special K Protein Bar - Honey/Almond

Snack = None

Lunch =  1 Minced Pork Barbeque Sandwich with Cole Slaw and a Limeade Soda

Snack =  None, 16oz. cup of coffee black with 2 Splenda sweetners.

Dinner =  GOOD MORNING APPLE PIE – This is a Special K “Yummy Idea” from their website where you top off Special K – Cinnamon Pecan Cereal with sliced apples.

I don’t recall seeing anything about coffee and tea and since these are normally calorie free until sweetner is added, I assume this is O.K. for the challenge.  Also, I know that my lunch is not from the “Special K Challenge Friendly Recipes,” which I have been trying to stick with, but I am using the excuse that I did have a meal as “normal.”

Workout:  P90X Legs & Back + Ab Ripper X:

As with the other DVDs, hard to keep up.  I made it through the warm up pretty easily, still breathing hard by the end of it and sweating, but  felt good that I was not totally exhausted.  Then came the workout for the legs and back.  I had no clue how hard this was going to be.  There is this exercise where you squat with your back against the wall so it looks like you are sitting on a chair without the chair.  This thing B-U-R-N-S!  Then for the back, there is the use of the pull up bar.  As Donnie Brasco  would say, “Forget About It.”  I was lucky if I did 4 or 5 pull ups.  Luckily the routines do switch up between back and legs, but by the time the end of the work out came around, I could barely do 1 pull up while they were still doing 15 -20.

I finally made it through the work out and guess what, Ab Ripper X comes on.    My jaw droped as I forgot that this was right afterwards.  Well it is part of the P90X work out for today so here we go.  I am pretty blown after the earlier workout so I really can not keep up this time.  I am probably doing 50% of the number of reps as the people in the video and grunting and breathing extra hard to do what I could.  Lets just say I was never so happy to finally get to the end of the video and do the cool down stretches.

Overweight and trying to conceive?

Are you overweight and trying to conceive? I have spoken with my colleagues and friends about this subject in great detail.  It is a medical fact that when your body is holding excess fat there is a chance that conception can be difficult.

I am going to tell you how your body stores fat and how to blitz that excess storage!!

Body Fat is from the food you have eaten that your metabolism hasn’t burned off.  There are two ways the body disposes of excess calories , it must store them as fat or dissipate them as heat through the body.  This is called Thermogenesis.

The body’s natural juices process food by producing heat, your metabolism  breaks down the fats within our food by turning it into energy, resulting in increased heat in the stomach and lower intestines. Our body carries out the same processes using natural fluids every day.  Everybody has a different level of metabolism, the higher the rate, the quicker you burn off fat.

It is difficult to measure your own metabolism, but you if you are wanting to lose weight I could guess that your metabolism is slower than average.  This can be caused by a number of issues, not drinking enough fluids, not eating regular meals, age and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Ok so we have explained and diagnosed…..  Now I guess you want the simple solution….

You should be drinking around 2 litres of water a day, this not only clears your body of toxins but also replenishes fluid lost throughout the day.  As crazy as it sounds drinking a decent amount of water every day gets eliminates water retention!!!   Its good for you so try to drink as near to the 2 litres as you possibly can.

Eat regular meals, by skipping meals you are telling your body to slow your metabolism.  Your metabolism works like a clock!  It starts first thing in the morning and gradually slows throughout the day, so that is better to have larger quantities of food first thing so that you can burn the fat off immediately, as the day progresses have smaller meals.

The only issue with natural metabolism is that it burns off the fat from food you are eating.  But what about the excess fat already stored in the body? Well for that you either need to increase your metabolism, or adhere to a good exercise routine.

Exercise is good for the body and even brief 20 minute walks can help.  A lot of people I have spoken with are too tired to exercise, busy lifestyles means we are spending more time in traffic and at work  so we have less time to get the park or the gym.

Eat a balanced diet, will increase your metabolism and provide you with more energy and No, chocolate orange is NOT one of your 5 a day!!

You can get a 30 day GI diet plan and exercise routine for only £2.50 at www.suddenlyslim.co.uk to give you ideas on how to boost your metabolism and lose-weight.  You also get free tips to help you along the way.  Available for a limited time from 13th Feb 2010

Rick - Keepin' on movin'!

Well, I’m a little over 4 weeks into this and I’ve lost 20 lbs.  I find that I really am eating a lot less.  For example, I used to be able to eat a whole Wendy’s Taco salad and have something with it (fries, etc.).  Now I can’t finish the salad.  I’m trying to be really concious of when I feel satisfied so I don’t over eat.

This is usually the time where I plateau so I’m going to work on being more consistent with exercising as I really haven’t been consistent.  I need to start setting specific days for exercise and follow that schedule as best as I can.

What Should You Expect From The Atkins Diet?

Over the past decade the health phenomenon of the Atkins diet has hit the diet world with incredible force. The Atkins diet relies on a book by Dr. Robert C. Atkins. It is based mostly on the concept that our weight gain is caused by the carbohydrates we have a tendency to consume and not the fat. Individuals typically experience quick weight loss with this plan. You should consult your doctor before starting any weight loss plan.

After you?are on the Atkins diet, there will be very little calorie counting, but say good-bye to junk foods and processed foods. You may conjointly be eating few carbohydrates and many foods high in protein. The idea behind the low-carb diet found with the Atkins diet is that by reducing your intake of those foods, you may enter a state referred to as ketosis. During ketosis, your body will burn fat within the body for fuel rather than using the foods in your diet, which will in turn stop insulin production, which will in turn prevent more fat from being stored.

There are four main stages to the Atkins diet: induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance, and maintenance. During the primary two weeks, you are within the induction stage. During this time, many individuals report losing fifteen pounds or more, simply as a result of carbohydrate intake being cut down to twenty grams every day. The sole carbs you’ll be able to have are low-carb vegetables, and even then they’re very limited. The second stage, known as ongoing weight loss, will let you have 25 grams every day. You may then move on to pre-maintenance, in which you’ll be able to try out alternative foods to work out what carbohydrates you’ll be able to add into your diet. Once you’ve reached your weight loss goals, you may eat all good carbs, but the premise behind the diet plan is that you just wont want to eat these foods. Choosing healthy carbs will become a way of life. Once you become conditioned to eating healthy carbs, it will simply become a natural part of your life and you may eat this way without even thinking about it.

You may should exercise for this eating regime to be successful. Healthy lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking will also improve your health. Because the Atkins diet is strict some individuals say the plan makes rebound weight gain inevitable. You would like to search out what works for you. Make positive you feel strong while you are losing the pounds if you feel weak or dizzy you are not getting enough calories to sustain yourself.

Rick - 4 weeks done and movin' on!

Well, 4 weeks are over finally.  I’d like to say that it’s been easy or will continue to be easy but it has been tough.  I find it the toughest when it’s convenient to go out to eat or we’re at some friends and there are snacks, etc. around.  For me, this is when it gets worse as I tend to become complacent and may cheat more.

Overall, I’ve lost 20 pounds,  down to 282 from 302.  I think it has been a combination of eating better and the Hydroxycut.    I’ve also discovered that I have a lot more success if I don’t snack after I eat supper.

An area that I think we all get stuck on is when we’re invited to go out for dinner.  We were fortunate enough to go out this weekend for a great turkey dinner.  My advice to you all is to plan ahead and to inform the host of your program.  I made sure that I ate more food that was low or zero points leaving me more points for the dinner.  We also contacted the host and asked for substitutions for us.  For example, we requested baked potatoes and that there wasn’t any butter added to the cooked peas and carrots.  These simple things saved us a ton of points.  Most people will accomodate so don’t be afraid to ask.

I also want to post one of my favourite recipes that is a huge hit at our house.  Again, this is a Weight Watchers recipe, and it is for Baked Macaroni and Cheese.

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees C.

  • 4 cups of hot cooked elbow macaroni without salt or fat
  • 2 cups of reduced fat cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup of 1% low fat cottage cheese
  • 3/4 cup fat-free sour cream
  • 1/2 cup skim milk
  • 2 tbls of grated onion
  • 1 1/2 tsp of margarine
  • 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 1/4 tsp of pepper
  • 1 egg, beaten

Combine the ingredients together and stir well.  Pour into a casserole dish that is lightly greased with cooking spray.

  • 1/4 cup of bread crumbs (I like corn flake crumbs better)
  • 1 tbls of margarine melted
  • 1/4 tsp of paprika (optional)

Combine and place on top of the macaroni mixture and spread to thinly coat it.  Cover with tinfoil and bake for 45 minutes.  Remove tinfoil and bake for another 5 to 10 minutes until the bread crumbs are browned.  Serving size is approximately 1 cup and is 8 points.  My kids love this and it is one of my favourites!

Take care and have fun!

Rick - Day 22

How is it going for everyone?  Things are going alright for me.  I continue to follow the weight watchers plan pretty closely and have recently reduced my points allowance from 32 to 31 for the day.  I may soon go to 30 but we’ll see.  Melanie and I have added more exercising into our plan.  We’re getting pretty good at Dance Dance Revolution….lol!

I’ve also had some people ask me how much my starting weight was.  This is always an embarrassing question but I know that it will only benefit me to answer it.  When I started this journey I weighed 302 lbs.  I know!!  My goal is around 240 lbs and with your help I hope to achieve it this year.

Food

  • Toast with butter – 4
  • Carrots – 0
  • Salad with raspberry vinaigrette dressing – 1
  • Roast Beef – 6
  • Turkey Chili – 8
  • Ice Cream (Breyers makes a great 100 calorie cup of ice cream) –  2
  • Pizza, an extremely small slice – 3
  • Popcorn with margarine – 7

Exercise

  • 1 hour of DDR

I’m also incorporating stretching into my daily life as I’m not very flexible.  I’ve been told by professionals that stretching for 5 – 10 minutes a day will benefit you for years.

Supplements

  • Nutrilite Daily Multivitamin (if you don’t take a multi yet, check this out; follow the link at the bottom of this post)
  • Nutrilite Antioxidant squeeze Tube
  • Hydroxycut Green Tea

If you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to pass them on to us.  Like always, please pass the link to our blog onto others.  The more the merrier!

Seven Ways To Rev up Your Metabolism and Drop Those Unwanted Pounds!

Are you bored with trying all the lose weight quick plans out there? Have you ever been disillusioned with the results? Do not despair here are seven tips to create a healthier, thinner, sexier you!

Sleep well, live well. In keeping with studies, people who just have 4 hours of sleep at night have slower metabolism than those that have 8-hour sleep. Moreover, the previous resort to overeating since they feel like eating would cover up the lack of sleep. You want to have enough sleep for you to feel revived when you ?get up?.

There’s recent research that tells us that our metabolism tends to slow down throughout the late afternoon or at the end of the day. Thus, in order for you to burn more calories, it is wise to do some evening walks and alternative exercise forms that will permit you to sweat it out and burn calories.

Don’t move slowly. You need to get your heart rate up. As you move more, you burn more calories. Rather than taking a ride to a place, close by. Walking is a better choice. You want to gradually make minor lifestyle changes. These are just minor adjustments therefore you’ll not have a hard time. It is as the fact that these could be easy for you’ll not would like hard exercise. This could be done during a like going up the stairs instead of taking the elevator, do gardening instead of watching TV.

Eat more proteins. Diet plan studies show that protein intake stabilizes the amount of insulin within the bloodstream. It is highly-useful for you.

Skipping meals is skipping life. A drastic amendment for your body isn’t good. Never dwell on the idea that missing a meal would make your waistline magically get smaller. Forever remember that wellbeing comes from deep within. You’ll never conceal the fact someday that you’re living an unhealthy life. Whenever you do suddenly stop in eating, your body would react to it in such a manner that it will hamper your metabolism.

Get out and sweat a small amount training will help you. Exercise will result in a higher metabolism it will also help you get more sleep thus cutting down on binge eating (your bodies way of getting more energy).

You need lean muscle mass. Having more of these lean muscles would mean a faster metabolism. A few push-ups and squats daily are a huge help. Simply remember that it is not all about sweating and overdoing it/working too hard it’s about small improvements that add up to a healthier body.

Never give up on your dream of a healthier, sexier you!

I Already Know How to Lose Weight

I already know how to lose weight. Eat less and exercise more. Or eat right and exercise more. Do aerobics for 45 minutes 3 times a week. Do strength training 3 times a week. Eat grapefruit. Eat more vegetables. Don’t eat fast food. Don’t snack.  Eat good snacks. Eat more fiber Drink more water. Don’t drink soda. Don’t eat sugar. Eat more fruit. Eat salad at dinner. No desert!

O.K. so now you’re really gonna do it. You joined Lifetime fitness. You got a trainer. You got the best sneakers. You got new sweats. You have a new diet. You’re ready! Off to the gym. You meet your trainer. You go over your 12 week plan. Then you do your first session. This is great! You’re pumped! You’re psyched! You’re doing it. You’re going to lose 50 lbs. this time You got through the week, 3 – 1 hour work-outs. Aerobics and weight training. Your trainer is good. You’re following your diet. It’s different from what you’re use to eating. But that’s O.K. you’re getting use to it. You feel great, a little sore, but great! No pain, no gain. Made it through the first week. Maybe I should reward myself with one of my favorite foods. No, stick to your diet. You’re doing great! I’ve lost 1 lb. It’s working.

Now it’s week 2. Off to a great start. You’ve kept to your diet. You’ve completed the 1st day of week 2. You’re a bit more sore. Muscles not used to moving so much. Wonder if you’re overdoing it. Session 2 of week 2. About a 1/2 hour into it, ouch, something pulled or torqued and it hurts. That’s the end of today’s session. It ends up being the end of that week. You got to let the sprain heal before you can exercise again. I need a little comfort food. I think I’ll have a Kit Kat. One won’t hurt. I’ll be back on track next week. I gained back 1.5 lbs.

Week 3. I still a little sore. I can’t work out the way I did last week. I really need to take it easy this week. I wonder if there’s an easier way to lose weight. Maybe I’m trying to do too much at once. I don’t think I can lose 50 pounds in 3 months. I haven’t lost anything yet and it’s already week 3. There has to be a better way. I don’t think I can make it for 12 weeks. There’s got to be an easier way. I know, weight loss pills. I going to take a break for a while and try it again later when I’m feeling better.

Any of this sound familiar? Great intentions. A good start and then a weak finish. If your 50 to 100 pounds overweight, that’s a huge commitment to start an exercise program. That’s where Fit In Five comes in. You start out slow with baby steps and build slowly over time. What you’re doing is creating new habits for life. When I said in a earlier post to walk every day I meant it. That’s one of the new habits. Start walking 5 minutes a day and it will change your life. Live long and prosper!

Rick - week 3 over

Welcome everyone!!

So far, 3 weeks into this journey and I’ve lost 16 pounds!  I actually haven’t found it overly difficult at the moment.  This weekend was a probably the hardest so far.  I went downhill skiing with some friends (great exercise and a lot of fun!).  Of course the menu was limited at the ski hill so I indulged a bit.  So that day was a write-off for the food plan.  The next day, I was right back on the wagon going strong.  Even with friends over for dinner I did fairly well!  I know that this is a mental battle more than anything.  I’m working on changing my thinking about food, exercise, and activities.  I’m trying to make food less of a focal point and having activities play more of a role in my life.

I know that we’ve gotten so much support from people that it’s really encouraging to keep up the battle.  For me, this is where things always have gotten a bit sketchy.  I do well and feel good about it then get it into my head that I can slack a bit.  That’s where it all falls apart.  I know that I have to just keep to the plan and keep moving forward.

I also know that my weight loss will start to taper off and eventually plateau.  I have to keep a positive attitude at that point and change things up a bit.  I learned about overcoming plateaus when I was younger and did weightlifting.  When you do the same thing over and over and over, your body will adjust and get used to it.  When weightlifting you can overcome this by adding more weight but you’ll get to a point where you just can’t lift it anymore, where it is just too heavy.  For me, I had a few extra exercises and I only did when I started to plateau.  I would do my regular routine and substitute in one or two of these variations for a couple of weeks.  This really shocked my body and it continued to adjust and grow.

Weightloss is the same process.  You have to do something different and change it up to keep the progress going.  This is where you can add in exercises and different activities into the mix to keep your body adjusting and it will continue to keep burning fat.  Jogging, jump rope, kickboxing, swimming, rock climbing, bike riding, etc…….. will help to keep your body adjusting.  Just keep varying the activities and you’ll continue to progress.

Please share our blog with others.  I hope to inspire people to work on losing weight and get into better shape through this and I can’t do it without your help!!  Also, keep posting your comments and ideas as there are a ton of people that need to know what you know and what your experiences are!  Take care and stay strong!

southwestern salad

i was so excited to make this and it’s soooo good and easy!!! and of course inexpensive. this recipe makes 15 servings- you can whip it all up in one bowl and separate it out, because it will def keep or freeze well. i separate everything into tupperwares and tad and i grab it and go to work.

ingredients:

15 oz. of havarti cheese (1 oz./serving)

2 lb. bag of frozen corn (2.1 oz./serving)

2 12 oz. bags of frozen pepper and onion blend (1.6 oz. per serving)

5 cans of black beans, drained and rinsed. each serving should get 3 oz. of beans, and each can has 3.67 servings, so you will have a bit left over.

4 avocados- each avocado has 4 1 oz. servings, so you will have 1 oz. left over.

1 lb. of baby spinach (1 oz. per serving)

crumble the cheese into a large bowl. stir in the frozen corn and frozen veggies- no need to defrost! mix in the drained and rinsed beans. if you are making in bulk, stop here and separate everything out. then add the avocado and the spinach a no more than a few hours before you want to eat, because it will brown.

if you are making a small quantity, go ahead and add the avocado and the spinach! one bowl, no cooking! whip up the dressing below and toss the salad with that right before you serve.

dressing

2 T of cilantro (1/4 tsp. per serving)

2 T of dill (1/4 tsp. per serving)

1 T of cumin (1/8 tsp. per serving)

1 cup of olive oil (1T per serving)

1 cup of balsamic vinegar (1 T. per serving)

lemon juice, salt, and pepper to taste.

one serving of this recipe has 525 calories, but it’s not bad at all considering how satisfied you are afterwards. THIS IS A BIG SALAD! and the best part- each serving is $1.33. more nutritional information to come via the soon-to-be updated grocery list.

Cycle Log: Endurance Phase Week 15

Week 15 is the last week of my Endurance Phase.  It is also a recovery week which worked out nicely since I was travelling on business and missed a few days of training.  Here are the actual workouts with the plan for the week of January 18 to 24, 2010 (click here to download my plan for the Endurance Phase).  I rode three times performing a VO2max/Sprint Interval workout, a Steady Spinning: Indoors ride and a Tempo ride.

Week of 1/18/10 Mon Tues Wed Th Fri Sat Sun Total Goal 2.0 SS 1.25 PI OFF 0.75 AR OFF 0.75 AR OFF 4.75 Actual OFF OFF 1.25 VO2/SI:S 1.0 SS:I OFF 1.25 Tempo OFF 3.5

I took Monday and Tuesday off because I was travelling out-of-state.  It was one of the rare times I went three consecutive days without training but that is actually good for recovery as long as you don’t do it too often!  All three of my rides were indoors including Wednesday’s VO2max/Sprint Intervals workout, which was my hardest training session in months.  I was working above lactate threshold during each interval.  Thursday’s ride was a Zone 2 spin while Saturday’s was a longer, harder effort.  I felt strong for all three rides and I’m looking forward to beginning my Intensity Phase this week!

Why you should start to live like a lion

If self doubt and fear keeping you from doing the things you want to do in life, If you have dreams, goals and expectations for yourself, If you sometimes get frustrated and mad at yourself because you are not doing anything to make these things happen…

You are not alone, and the good news is that there is something you can do about it.

Remember when you were a kid and and someone asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up?

A fire fighter, a movie star, Indiana Jones, a Lego man… yes, and I bet you didn’t flinch for a second or thought is this actually going to be possible at all, or how am I going to do this, or I am just not good enough to be a Lego man!

You believed anything is possible.

Your mind was working effectively: You want, you imagine, you go get it.

Many of my clients tell me they hate the way they look, that they feel fat, unhealthy, tired and depressed…

When I ask them what’s stopping them from looking and feeling the way they want, the answer is usually: I don’t know, or I don’t think I can do it, or what if I fail?

Human self doubt and fear fascinates me. I say human because sometimes I can’t help comparing us to the animal kingdom.

Let me explain… African lions must hunt daily to survive. Actually, this seems to be the lionesses’ task and often they’ll hunt together. They’ll go somewhere where they know their prey is likely to hang out. Usually close to water.

How do I know this? Thanks to David, Attenborough!

The lionesses see their prey, devise a strategy, take action. They chase the prey until they make the kill, or the animal manages to get away.

If they succeed, great! If the prey  gets away, what do they do?

Do they spend hours on end feeling bad about themselves for having failed? Do they decide there is no point in trying to hunt again in case they fail? Do they give up hunting altogether as it seems they are no good at it cos they failed before?

No, they don’t. They look for the next opportunity.

Once I gave a client this example and he said: how can you compare, if lions stop hunting they’ll die and just get extinct.

To which I replied: Well, in my view, if you are not hunting for the things you want in your life, then you are not really living anyway.

If you spend your life wishing things were different, while doing nothing to change your situation…

If all you do is feel bad about the fact you are not doing anything, doubting your ability to do what you were born to do, fearing failure…

If you are not at least trying to live the life you want… are you really alive?

A good friend once shyly confided in me that they could not ride a bike without stabilisers.

I know a lot of people who can’t but they are all under ten years of age. My friend is twenty two.

I asked how come he couldn’t ride a bike without stabilisers. I knew my friend had been badly bullied as a child and I assumed maybe that had something to do with it. He said not at all.

I asked if it his parents hadn’t taught him. He said they had certainly tried.

Then I got really curious and asked: What happened then?

He replied: I guess I one day I just told myself I couldn’t do it… and so, I didn’t do it.

What is the main difference between you and that person who is living the life you would love to live, doing the things you want to do? Is it to do with talent, knowledge, experience, social status, money…?

Is it possible that they also doubt their ability sometimes, that they make mistakes, that they have ups and downs?

I believe author Susan Jeffers hit the nail in the head when she wrote: Feel the fear and do it anyway.

You see, someone who is doing the things you would like to do, and living the kind of life you would like to live,  may be fearful sometimes too, and go for it anyway!

Rick - Day 10

Well 10 days into this journey and going well.  I ran into a bit of a common but difficult situation yesterday.  I was doing work with a client and they took me out to lunch.  What to get that didn’t blow the food plan??  I know there were a few options like salad or soup but I couldn’t figure out the approximate point values of those in my head.  So I opted for a steak sandwich.  I knew that steak was a bit easier for me to figure out and I didn’t have fries but a small bowl of tomato soup (all of it was soooooo delicious!).  Was it the best choice?  I don’t think it was a terrible choice but there may be something better.

Underliving

I am tired of the term “overeating”.  I am going to refer to overeating as under living.  If someone asked you if you had a problem under living you would probably laugh.  Of course I am not under living thats crazy, they would say.  However you cannot live your highest quality of life if you are over eating.

When I would overeat I was in a low place.  When my clients over eat they are in low places.  When I watch people overeat you  can see them begging themselves to stop with no ability to  listen.  If we are constantly turning to food for comfort and eating past the point of being full we are not fully living.

So instead of thinking of yourself as having an overeating problem think about the fact that you could live so much more fully and wholly than you currently are.  Now if you set forth to live the best, highest quality of life right now, eating will start to sit on the back burner.  If you are reaching goals and hew heights to make a difference in the world and people lives, how important do you think that cupcake will be?  If you are saving lives or giving back to the community, is an extra donut even worth anything?

The next time you sit down at a meal or grab a snack just remember this food will provide you pleasure and satisfaction only up to the point in which you are full.  After that point it will sit in your stomach disguised as guilt and shame.  It is time to stop under living and start truly living to your fullest, that way food is just food and not your ticket to guilt, shame, and regret.

The Fastest Way to Lose Fat: Positive Thinking

Starving your body is not the fastest way to lose fat. Sadly, this is what many of the so-called miracle diets advise. Following are some of the risks of such a diet:.

- Lack of proper nutrition makes your health suffer.

- Your body goes into a starvation mode, causing it to store more fat when you eat the next time.

- You start losing muscle mass and your body’s metabolic rate drops.

What’s more, you cannot follow these diets for prolonged periods of time (thankfully). So what’s the outcome when you get off such a diet? You gain additional weight.

So, is there an effective way to lose weight fast?

Your focus should be on the healthiest way to lose fat instead of on the fastest way to lose weight and fat. You need to focus on thinking positively and believing that you will lose weight and fat and keep it off, with the appropriate amount of time and effort.

Achieving a positive attitude is possible with an active exercise program. The “feel good” chemicals called endorphins are released during exercise. When released, this “good feeling” encourages positive thinking. The fastest way to lose fat is to perform exercises like running, cycling, and weight lifting, all of which result in a release of endorphins.

Not only will you want to eat less but also the release of endorphins makes you feel better. You will want to exercise on a near daily basis as you get accustomed to the “exercise high” that you get from endorphins; also, you will feel happy about all the activities that you do.

Consuming healthy and nutritious foods helps you think positively since it does not make you feel bloated and fat. Hunger can cause negative responses to be triggered in the brain. Eating at least 5 to 7 meals everyday will help get rid of these negative emotions. This too is the fastest way to lose fat.

Knowing from deep inside that you soon will be thin is part of having a positive attitude. Try a method called visualization. Whenever you next exercise, imagine your body burning fat. The fastest way to lose fat is to use the power of visualization combined with healthy nutrition and proper exercise.

Paint a mental picture of yourself at the size you want to be, and imagine that you are buying clothes that are not labeled XXL. This will help you keep a positive attitude and will also help you get through the rough patches.

There is more to this battle than just losing weight. Unable to maintain the weight lost makes the effort of losing weight pointless. Thinking positively has an important role to play here too. It keeps your motivation level high, helping you to stick with your diet and exercise program.

You can lose weight by thinking positively, but you also need proper exercise and nutrition to win the battle of the bulge.

Tracking the progress of your daily weight loss plan

Now that your food is on track, you’re working out, how are you measuring your progress?

Track your progress, and you’re more likely to keep your motivation and stay aware of how you’re doing.

There are five major factors that help you tell whether your daily weight loss plan is working correctly.

1) Changes in body weight: It might seem counterintuitive, but a scale might not be the best way to track progress. It seems strange to say, but the scale isn’t the best reader of change.

Your weight isn’t the most accurate portrayal of how your body composition is morphing.

The number probably won’t budget if you’re losing body fat but gaining muscle mass.

But the scale is listed because it can be helpful.

If you’re just trying to lose weight, then you’ll see a difference on the scale as part of your daily weight loss plan.

There are a couple guidelines to follow when stepping on the scale.

The first is to use the same scale every time you weigh yourself.

Second, step on the scale at the same time of the day each time.

Depending on what you ate or drank, your weight can change within the 24-hour period.

2) Changes in body fat percentage, and 3) Changes in lean muscle mass. These tracking methods are the biggest factors in your daily weight loss plan. Determining these two factors should be the main goal of your daily weight loss plan.

In the end, it matters most that you lose body fat and gain muscle mass.

It’s difficult to get an accurate measurement, though.

For most people, it’s best to use the “skin-fold measurements” method.

Most of your body fat is located right underneath the skin.

Using calipers to measure the thickness, you can get a decent reading.

Getting the most accurate count isn’t really the most important thing, though.

You must measure the thickness the same way each time as part of your daily weight loss plan and compare the readings.

Take the measurements and plug it into a formula to figure out lean muscle mass.

Lean muscle mass is defined as any type of body weight that’s not fat, such as bone, water, or muscle.

Multiple your weight in pounds by your percentage of body fat.

This is your fat mass in pounds.

Next, subtract that number from your weight in pounds.

The resulting number is your lean body mass in pound.

Here’s an example of a person who weighs 180 pounds and has 20 percent body fat.

180 x.20 = 40.
180-40 = 140.

The formula tell us that he or she has 40 pounds of fat and 140 pounds of lean muscle mass.

Measure yourself about once a week.

Any more frequently than that, and you’ll risk getting obsessed.

Any less frequently, and the numbers might not be as accurate.

4) Changes in body part measurements. Use a tape measure to start tracking.

The numbers will decrease if you’re losing fat.

You can measure your waist, chest, hips, thigh and upper arm.

You can also include your forearm, calf and neck for a more detailed reading, but you won’t see a lot of change in these.

It’s best to take measurements in the morning before your muscles get bigger from a workout.

5) Changes in appearance. This is what we all really want, right? Let’s be honest, this is what we’re usually looking for.

Stand in front a mirror and you can see the changes.

This isn’t exactly the most reliable method of progress-tracking.

But it will give you an overall picture of your progress.

Take before/after pictures for another appearance tracking method.

Small changes won’t be as easy to see visually when you check every day.

Compare two pictures though, and you’ll probably see a drastic difference.

If you track your daily weight loss plan with these five factors, it will give you a good indicator of how you’re doing.

Make adjustments if you need to, but revel in your accomplishments.
